NaNoWriMo: Day 1

Day one of NaNoWriMo has been a success. And as soon as I figure out how to update the widget, you'll see my tiny crawl towards the finish line.

My goal was to write a minimum of 1, 667 words. When I started writing around 8-ish this a.m, I thought I'd never make it.

As of this writing, nearly twelve hours later, I currently sit at 2,026 words. However, the pessimistic side of me knows that had I focused, I'd be at least 1,000 further along.

Here's the hindsight to Day 1:

Things that I did right:

  • Committing to going on this journey and announcing it to anyone that was willing to listen
  • Choosing to stay home and embrace a quiet and empty house when the husband needed to go to town for plumbing supplies (more on that in a later post)
  • Writing even when I hit a snag and my inner editor started nagging at me to give up before I made a fool out of myself
  • Hitting my minimum goal before the mens came home from school
Things I did wrong:
  • Checking Facebook and email for new notifications, obsessively
  • Watching an episode of "Breaking Bad" as a break
  • Watching "The Chew" during my lunch hour
  • Spending three hours searching/brainstorming for a name for a fictional grocery store

My secondary goal with this journey is to post here daily. Sort of a behind-the-scenes look at a novel in progress. I know I love that sort of stuff; reading the notes an author made before I actually reading the book. Surely I can't be the only one.

(And don't call me Shirley. Heh.)

At the end of day 1, I'd like to give a shout-out and what-what to one of my besties, the unfaltering Mamikaze, who was the inspiration for this current work in progress. Her faith and support in my dream is not something I will ever forget. She is a beautiful person, and I cherish her friendship.

Suddenly, I feel the need to run -- okay, it's been a long day --  limp out of the room singing, "We Are the Champions."

But it's been no bed of roses
No pleasure cruise -
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race -
And I ain't gonna lose -

Maybe that'll keep me from sitting in a corner two weeks (or less), crying into my Diet Coke singing, "Another One Bites the Dust."

Am I right?

I know it. I can't stop watching this show. We are OBSESSED. And since Netflix only has up to season 4, and we are two episodes into that season, we're trying to figure out what we're going to do when we've seen them all.

I learned not to spend too much time brainstorming or searching for names of anything during the writing process -- if I'm not sure while I'm writing I just assign a temporary name like XYZ Grocery or Mrs. Nutcase (seriously -- she was Mrs. Nutcase for most of a story one time before I finally decided on a name for her).  We're just supposed to be writing, writing, writing this month -- the edits and finishing touches are to come later.  Glad it's going well for you.

Hey Lori! I am glad you are doing this as well! It's been an interesting process. Not because I've never attempted a novel before, but more of that pressure knowing the only way I"ll make it is by staying on top of a minimum daily word count.

I did finally just name that grocery store TBN Foods (to be named).
Ironically, I am sick to death of my protagonist's name. She will probably be renamed in the second draft.
