Heard it through the grapevine

Remember the literary publication that I asked for your help? And remember how I was on the editorial committee?

Well, a couple of weeks ago I got an email stating that it would not be included but be sure to come to a reception!

I already had known about it and was going anyway. Of course, it had to be on a Tuesday and Big Daddy always closes on Tuesdays.

Yesterday afternoon I called my neighbor to see if the boys could hang there while I went. In our conversation of upcoming events, she asked if they could just spend the night since I have school tomorrow.

Only if you twist my arm.

I had just gotten off the phone with her when Big Daddy and the boys walked in. (They spent half the day at his work since I couldn't miss school yesterday.) Darrin looked like he was going to throw up any second, so I didn't mention the plans just in case.

Because they weren't going until 3:15, I didn't even tell them this morning when I was confident that everyone was healthy.

Around 11:30, I decided to tell them. ( I can't remember why now). I say, "Oh, yeah. I have something to tell you guys..."

Nicholas is looking down. He raises his face, his blue eyes twinkle with that hint of 10-year old mischief and says, "I already know."

"Know what?"

"We are spending the night with Chris and Blake."

Jaw drops. "How did you know?"

"I heard you talking to Daddy last night."

Gulp.

"What else did you hear?"

"Nothing."

Crap.

Later on he tells me, "You know. It's weird that I heard you talking. It's not like you were talking loud."

Yeah. Good thing.

Anyway, I went to the reception. It was pretty nice even though only four contributors were present. The other twenty some odd people were faculty. I also read my story out loud was congratulated for my award from last week. I was surprised (and very flattered) on how many people knew and knew me.

Now I am home alone with my inflated ego, watching "The Biggest Loser," studying history, and eating cookies for dinner.

I am sure Nicholas knows that, too.

You'd be surprised what professors know. They like to talk to each other about the good students. Just sayin'.

Once, after I passed my written exams, I got in an elevator full of faculty who I knew to look at but had never been introduced to. One was all, "Congrats on your exam score." I'm sorry - what? Nice confidentiality, kids.
